The Match

Well hello there! It's been quite some time, hasn't it?! Oh my! Well, I've just been chugging along, taking electives, yadda yadda, and getting my application for residency ready to send out. What's that? I never said what I wanted to do? My bad!

Well, I'm going into Psychiatry. That's right, Psychiatry. Not what I ever really imagined, but the field I found continually interesting. And there is enough overlap with Neurology that it keeps me interested. I love stuff with the brain, but once you get into the spinal cord and peripheral nerves, I'm kinda bored. Seriously. And while I loved Family Medicine, and will miss carrying my stethoscope around with me every day, Psychiatry was the one field I thought I would enjoy learning about for the rest of my life. So there you have it.

So anyway, I did finalize my application a couple of weeks ago, and I've already gotten a few interview offers. Yay! Now I just need to balance flying all over this winter, while still getting to go home for a bit to visit. I have a feeling it is going to get a little crazy.

So what is this whole interviewing, ranking, matching process you may have heard of? It's kind of hard to explain. I've tried several times with some people *cough*cough*momanddad*cough*cough and I think they've got it now, but here is a link to an explanation on someone else's blog, and here's an explanation from the NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) itself.

Happy reading! And please keep your fingers crossed that none of my flights get canceled. :)

Science!

This is awesome.

And yes, I know I haven't posted in a while. Been busy. Savin' lives, yo.

Not really. Just lazy.

Super productive morning

Check this out. Interesting on several levels.

And also...

...can people stop having so many medical issues? Seriously. It's just more work for students and residents. Please take better care of yourselves.

And if you can't help but be sick (geez), keep an up to date list of your medications and their doses. It is soooo helpful. For realsies.

Internal Medicine

I am currently sitting with my team going over our patients (also known as "rounding", and clearly not always done bedside as we are sitting in a computer room in the back of the library), I am post call, and I just kind of don't care. Of course none of my patients are critical, so I don't have anything to be worried about. But I'm just kind of over it. I'm only in my second week, and I have 6 1/2 more weeks to go. Not a good sign.

I wish that once we figure out what we want to go into, we can just skip the rest of the rotations. Sigh.

Blizzard 2011

Here is some footage other people took of the blizzard and it's aftermath.

And also, tonight in the ER was a little better, but I still don't like it, and you can't make me.

Emergency Medicine

I hate it. Okay, so hate is a pretty strong word. And one I want to use. I HATE it. I just finished my first shift in the Emergency Department, and I think it is my least favorite rotation so far. Although I did really dislike psych on my first day, so maybe things will get better. But I kind of doubt it. It's just so crazy and chaotic and there are papers and charts lying here and there and all willy-nilly. I prefer clean, organized places to work. But I guess it was kind of busy tonight and no one really had a chance to give me a tour or talk to me about it, so I felt un-oriented. So maybe things will get better, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Also, this may be horrible to say, but I really prefer the suburban hospitals to the urban ones. And not just because they are usually nicer and newer, but because I don't have to drive through really shitty neighborhoods to get to them. Does that make me a bad person?

Okay, it's 11:30 and I've got a pizza in the oven and a glass of wine in hand. Guess which one I will finish first? :)

The aftermath

Blizzard 2011!

In case you are wondering, that snow drift is 30 inches deep. Yup.

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

21

inches deep on the deck now.

17 inches

That is how deep the snow drift is on our back deck. And this blizzard still has all night.

Plus, they closed Lake Shore Drive and there are still people stranded on it in their cars.

Yeah, don't think I'll be making it in to my first shift tomorrow morning.

Monday, January 31, 2011

Ugh.

Guess who has her first ER shift at 6am on Wednesday when they are predicting over 20 inches of snow in the worst blizzard of the year? Yup, moi.

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Also,

read this.

Is it spring yet?

22 inches of new snow predicted by Wednesday morning. Crap.

Family Med

So I haven't posted anything in a while. I'm doing Family Medicine right now. Basically I diagnose a lot of people with viral upper respiratory infections (hey, it's going around right now) and give lots of vaccines. The kiddos hate me, but they warm up at the end when I give them a lollipop. Seriously. Bribery is key. Family Med is okay, but I kind of don't like that it's all over the place. And by that I mean I'll have one patient with the sniffles, then another kid who needs shots, then a woman who needs a pap, then some teenager who needs a physical exam for school. Yeah, there's a lot of variety, but I think I prefer focusing on one area (like psych!). This being all over the place kind of throws me.

Plus it's been super cold here (it was 30 below zero with the windchill a few nights ago) so I've been suffering from the winter blahs. Blah.

I start Emergency Med at Sinai next week. Hopefully I'll see some sweet bloody traumas to keep me interested. Fingers crossed!

A good Friday night is...

pajamas, a rented movie, and drugs. Yeah!

(And by drugs I mean antibiotics, because I have been sick all frickin' week and my resident finally, at the request of our nurses, gave me a prescription so I wouldn't have coughing fits all over our patients again next week.)
